Fall Hikes in Banff: Where to See Golden Larches and Autumn Colours

Fall is a magical time to hike in Banff National Park. Cooler temperatures, quieter trails, and the golden glow of larches give familiar landscapes a whole new feel. As the mountains prepare for winter, it’s the perfect season to be inspired by the changing scenery and to return renewed after a day outdoors.

Whether you’re chasing golden larches, exploring Lake Louise, or looking for a quieter trail, here’s your guide to the best fall hikes near Banff.

When Is the Best Time to See Fall Colours in Banff?

Larch season in Banff typically runs from mid-September to mid-October, depending on the year’s conditions. By the third week of September, most larch trees have turned a stunning golden yellow, making it the peak time for fall hiking.

If you’re planning your trip, remember that fall days are shorter, so set out early and always carry extra layers.

Top Fall Hikes in Banff National Park

Larch Valley Trail

As its name suggests, the Larch Valley Trail is the most famous larch hike in Banff National Park. Starting at Moraine Lake near Lake Louise, this 9 km return trail takes around four hours to complete. Expect a moderate hike, with some steep switchbacks at the beginning.

Please note: personal vehicles cannot drive to Moraine Lake. You’ll need to book a Parks Canada Shuttle or go with a private tour operator (see details on Banff Lake Louise Tourism).

Larch Valley is very popular in autumn, so expect company on the trail. The views of golden forests framed by jagged peaks make it worthwhile.

Lake Agnes & Big Beehive

Fall is also an ideal time to hike the Lake Agnes Trail and continue up to Big Beehive. From the turquoise waters of Lake Louise, this 7 km round trip (3–4 hours) rewards hikers with panoramic views of glaciers, alpine lakes, and pops of yellow foliage.

If you’re visiting before Canadian Thanksgiving (early October), pause at the historic Lake Agnes Teahouse for tea and snacks before tackling the steeper climb up to Big Beehive.

On the way down, you’ll reach a junction that connects to the Plain of Six Glaciers Trail. This longer option (19 km return, 6–8 hours) leads to dramatic glacier views and another historic teahouse.

Plain of Six Glaciers

For those with a full day, the Plain of Six Glaciers is one of the most rewarding hikes in Banff. Allow 6–8 hours and prepare for a 19 km return journey. This trail highlights Banff’s rugged beauty, from sweeping alpine valleys to the icy landscapes of Abbot Pass.

Most hikers enjoy this as an add-on to Lake Agnes and Big Beehive, making for a spectacular autumn adventure.

Easy & Less Crowded Fall Hikes Near Banff

If you’re looking for something gentler or less busy, consider Chester Lake in nearby Kananaskis Country. While not inside Banff National Park, it’s a favourite fall hike just 1.5 hours’ drive from Banff.

This 10 km round trip can be completed in around three hours. The trail is relatively easy, with golden larches scattered along the way and a beautiful alpine lake at the midpoint. Continue beyond the lake to the Elephant Rocks, nestled in a golden larch meadow, for a peaceful reward away from the crowds.

Note: You’ll need a Kananaskis Conservation Pass to access this area.
