Everyone looks forward to a long weekend; a chance to catch our breath and relax with the ones we love. Here at the The Juniper Hotel, we believe that nature feeds wellbeing. On the Alberta Family Day weekend, we’re excited about outdoor activities that will bring the whole family together.

In the cold winter months, it’s tempting to huddle together indoors, but if you make the effort to get outside this Family Day weekend you’ll be reaping the rewards for weeks to come. We all know that being active is good for us, improving both our physical and mental health. But studies show that those benefits are boosted when we exercise in nature. Stepping outside of our everyday routine and away from traffic and noise of our urban environments lets our brains really relax. Just being in nature relieves stress and boosts our mood. Plus it’s the perfect way to spend some family bonding time – researchers using fMRI machines found that parts of the brain associated with love and empathy were activated when volunteers viewed nature scenes,

Many parents worry about the amount of time their kids spend using technology. While smartphones and tablets are a key part of life in 2018, it’s important for the whole family to take some time to disconnect and really be present. A trip to Banff National Park might be just the ticket. There are outdoor winter activities to suit everyone. Enjoy the free skating rink in the centre of Banff, or head to one of the three world class ski resorts within an hour’s drive. The Juniper Hotel is located minutes from Mount Norquay, a family-friendly local hill that also offers snow tubing. There are plenty of easy walking trails that are accessible in the winter time – just bring a good pair of boots, or rent a set of ice cleats from one of our local stores.

At the end of a fun-filled day, there are plenty of places to soak your tired muscles, from the Juniper’s own cozy hot tub to the Banff Upper Hot Springs. You’ll have worked up an appetite, so you might want to check out the Juniper Bistro’s Apres-Ski menu, available every day from 3-6pm. Plus, you can reassure your teenagers that we have free wifi – we’d love it if they shared pictures of your adventures with us on social media using #JuniperBanff.

Wishing you all a very happy long weekend from the team at The Juniper Hotel!
